assume Google spends not a single cent on GWT any more. Even in this case, 
GWT will be with us for quite some time to come. The source is in public 
domain. I've seen Apache projects survive for a decade, with much less 
installed user base.
 
Come to think about it - why would Google, a commercial company, subsidise 
the web-development effort the worldwide community ? I'm all for a free 
tool, but there are proper places to offer that: Apache, Eclipse. Even 
Spring can be considered free, since its owners only change for courses and 
educational material.
