There is a new framework called Slotted (http://code.google.com/p/slotted/), that adds the concept of nested slots to GWT Activities and Places. It provides complete url for complex nested UIs. It is still in the very early phases of development and not well documented yet. It does have an example where it ports the existing GWT Activities and Places to the Slotted framework.
As a full discloser, I'm the creator of the framework and I created it for a startup that I'm working for. I'm actively working on it, but was hoping to have a couple more weeks before I posted it to the forum. The API should be nailed down in the next couple of weeks (open to input), and will then create documentation. There is a build script now that will package the framework to be used in a lib directory, and I hope to get a download jar and into maven repository soon.
