I changed my default calendar to have a default reminder.  That seems
to have corrected the issue with reminders on the main calendar.
Thanks for the help.  I think it should work the other way, but
knowing that only the "time" field is sent and there is no way to sync
the "type" field is a great help.

If I understand this correctly, I would need to set a default reminder
on every calendar in order to sync reminders.  If I do this, then for
the other calendars I will always get 10 minute reminders.  As I
understand it there is still a problem with calendars other than the
main calendar that are using tags.

A better explaination on this on your help page would be a good thing.
