New clue:
The GooSync worked several times but then stopped working again.
The difference was that the Palm Desktop Hotsync was on when I
initiated the GooSync.
This time, re-setting the Treo made GooSync work again.
My guess is that this did not work yesterday because the stored Proxy
password, recently entered, was lost during the re-set.

I guess my problem is solved, but maybe the Goosync support team can
work on preventing the lock-up following any of
- Initiation of GooSync whil Hotsync is on
- Bad passwords to the http and/or Socks proxy
- low  USB send timeout in Softick PPP
