A live CD is slow because it does not run from a hard-disk, but from a 100 times slower CD, and on top of that all the files on the CD are compressed to save space, and have to be decompressed on the fly. Also there isn't a swap file, so if there is lack of space in RAM, (everything that is needed to be executed or read is kept in RAM) then it has to be discarded to make more RAM space, and if its needed again it has to be decompressed and loaded again.
Gadgets isn't out yet, the current version is a beta test version. Which is best is mostly a question of taste, gOS slowly evolves, and in principle should become "better" in time, but what is "better" also depends on your needs.
