If you have hardware that has good linux support, it will usually
simply work effortlessly "out of the box", if instead you have
hardware that isn't generally supported by its maker (with open source
drivers, or even just a closed source driver suitable for all versions
of Linux, then you might be in for a more troublesome experience, as
some "hacking" is needed, like using a driver written originally for
Windows, (or another Linux version) using some "trickery".

It al depends on the hardware, unfortunately even netbook designers
still choose (WiFi) hardware from manufacturers that ignore Linux, and
do not want to support it by releasing drivers to the general Linux
community.

In as OS that is release with that hardware that is often not a
problem, as the hardware designers can get direct support from the
hardware makers, but these solutions are "closed", and do not carry
over to other Linux distributions, without (again) a lot of "hacking".
So just because the (Linux) OS on some netbook works with the hardware
in that netbook, do not think the drivers that are used in that OS
will be available to other Linux distributions. It's a sad state of
affairs...
