Success! I finally managed to install gOS 3, and the good news is it wasn't a problem with gOS at all.
I got around to try to install Ubuntu 8.04, from an official installation DVD, not a home burned one, and to may amazement and chagrin, it failed in exactly the same way! So I replaced my DVD player (with which I have installed dozens of Linux distributions), and after that gOS installed without any problems! So it seems my old DVD player had developed a problem. Now I just use gOS, and await the final version(s) more relaxed.
