Upgrading will wreck your system because it removes all Linux kernels
from your system. The upgrade has become incompatible with gOS (all
versions before 3.0) after Ubuntu "upgraded the upgrader" to install
parts of Ubuntu Hardy Heron (version 8.04), and these were not
compatible with gOS.
Your only (free) recourse is to re-install gOS. I would install gOS
2.9 or wait a while for gOS 3.
