I don't think you can and if you do try a dist upgrade it might break more
than it updates.

Here is what I have done, I have several spare hard drives so installing
another version is not a problem especially when I am able to copy/move my
/home  at will, additionally I keep my information on Google docs and backed
up on my local hard drive, if a new version
such as 3.x beta comes around I just install it on a different partition
hda3 or 4  each spare partition is 20 gigs in size so i have plenty of
room, i install the new grub to the mbr but some like to install it to the
partition but that requires learning a little more about editing the
/boot/grub/menu.lst  file and that can take some learning so I find it easy
enough to just let it install to the mbr.
