It is extremely unlikely you will find a Linux virus on gOS because the way the operating system is organised. You have probably already come up against user permissions which lock any malware into one area and stop it spreading. Of much more interest to Linux users are rootkits. Rootkits are programs that get on to your system and change ALL the user permissions to a system-wide permission, much like Windows. Then any malware introduced will affect all the system. There are two programs to obtain to scour out rootkits from your system: rkhunter and chkrootkit. More about these can be found at http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2006/12/various-ways-of-detecting-rootkits-in.html If you share files with Windows users its probably a good idea to make sure you are not spreading Windows viruses as well. Fortunately there is a good virus checker for Windows viruses in Linux, called clamAV. If you don't mind some KDE apps getting on your gOS system, there's a pretty good front end for it in Klamav (incidentally, its been ported to Windows as ClamWin - if you use Windows try it out). http://www.clamav.net/ So...the answer is its not really necessary to have a virus checker in Linux, but if you must have one, try ClamAV. More important are the rootkit tools: I'd advise everybody to scan at least daily whilst they are disconnected from the internet with both -- Graham Todd --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "gOS Linux" group.
