The ubuntu model frowns on setting up a user root with full
priveledges. You simply type sudo in term before performing adimin
tasks. In the desktop environment it will usually let you enter your
user password to perform admin tasks. In one case, where there was
apparently a bug which wouldn't accept my password, I was able to use
the authorizations utility to give myself permission to perform the
task. There is a button to reset to default once you no longer need
permission to maintain security.
