Ok, so Gparted recognizes the usb key as /dev/sdc , fat16 filesystem
(which is why i want it formated) but it has a locked symbol beside it
and won't let me select anything but unmount and information. Is that
because of the key? Gparted? needs a sudo?

Insight would be nice! :)
