''Noticed that it say gOS 2.6.x.x. I thought the latest version was
3.0?''

No those are two separate things, the 2.6.x.x is the Linux kernel that
gOS is based on (see the technical FAQ), the gOS version should still
be 3.0.

Try if the live_CD boots on another PC, perhaps at work, or at your
neighbor, or friends PC.

X-windows, or the "X windows system" is the low-level graphics system
for Linux systems, its the piece of software that handles driving all
the different video hardware, controls the mouse cursor, and makes it
possible for another piece of software, the "window manager" to create
overlapping Windows, and all the other stuff that makes up a Graphical
User Interface.

See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-windows

Your initial question mentions that you have problems with the "sr0"
device, which is your CD/DVD player, this error points to problems
with reading data from the CD/DVD, rather than problems with the video
driver. It is possible that you just have a flakey CD/DVD player, and
that gOS just crashes while trying to read (boot) data.

and

It is rare for gOS not to be able to boot up X-windows at all,
especially if not even safe mode works, as gOS uses very conservative
defaults to ensure that X-windows at least runs.
