Hmm, in my rushed job at posting this (it's nearly 3AM!), I neglected
to notice all the numbers OpenOffice had thrown-in, making parts of my
post difficult to read...

Here's the instructions again, hopefully a little clearer this time:

1. Open a Terminal window (usually gOS menu-->Accessories-->Terminal).

2. Click “Edit” and “Paste” the following text into the Terminal (Ctrl
+V won't work in Terminal!):
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

3. Hit “Enter”.

4. Type your password in and hit "Enter".

5. In the box that appears, scroll all the way to the very bottom and
add the following on a new line:
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

6. Save the file (Ctrl+S) and close the dialog box.

7.Restart and your sound should be working!

If for some reason this doesn't work (unlikely), be sure to repeat the
process above and remove “options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1”, just in
case...
