Hi Jack, I know this is a strange suggestion BUT do any of the music or sound applications 'look' as if they work when you try playing something?
If so, try plugging your speakers into the headphone jack instead of the PC speaker jack. I solved the problem on my daughter's machine (a different one to your's) by doing this.
