gOS 3.1 is, just like gOS 3.0, based on the latest "long term stable"
version of Ubuntu 8.04 (A.K.A. Hardy Heron), older versions were all
based on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). Ubuntu is NOT compatible with
(elements of) Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) so manually upgrading with
Ubuntu 8.10 repositories may break your system, rendering it unusable!

Note that updating your system (with the automatic update manager) is
fine because the "software sources" only contain URL links to
repositories with Ubuntu 7.04 compatible software, or (if you
installed the right link (see welcome message on main page here) with
gOS specific repositories (for gOS specific updates).

Up-dating is installing updates (improved elements) of the same basic
OS, while up-grading is removing basic OS elements and replacing them
with versions for a new OS version. See it like this, if you have
Windows XP, then up-DATEing is like installing security patches for
windows XP, while up-GRADing is like installing Windows Vista.

Remarkably Ubuntu is capable of just that latter feat, but only
because Canonical (the makers of Ubuntu) wrote a specific upgrading
engine to do exactly that. But because Good OS (the makers of gOS) are
not part and parcel of Canonical, Canonical does not care that their
up-grader is incompatible with gOS, so using it will break gOS, as gOS
is too different from regular Ubuntu for the up-grader to work.

gOS won't auto upgrade (and break your system), unless you muck around
with software sources, or with Synaptic, so be careful with these, and
never allow an upgrade, only updates.
