Thank you so much.  That was an incredibly thorough and detailed
reply, and it really sheds some light on what's going on behind the
scenes with the gOS installation.  I did see that first partition but
just chalked it up as something that was probably supposed to be there
but wasn't a real partition (since it had no drive assignment).  Now
I'm wondering what effect it will have.

I also am glad to know that the weird partition software "glitch" of
not letting me create new partitions was simply the 4-partition-per-
drive limit.

I won't have a chance to check out your suggestions tonight, but I
will very soon.   I think if I can't figure out what that 43MB
partition is, I might just go with option 2 rather than risk mucking
up my XP installation.

I'll come back and update on how things turn out, but for now thank
you for the frankly awesome, extremely fast response.
