There are even two different formats that Planet provides for
automating a local subscription of all the aggregated feeds:
FOAF -- http://planet.mozilla.org/foafroll.xml
OPML -- http://planet.mozilla.org/opml.xml
That are 534 feeds a new contributor would have to evaluate in
addition to project feeds.
And there isn't an easy way to say "I would like to just see
Mozilla-centric posts" using those feeds. Or even to get
finer-grained. (There are other Planet instances to solve this, but
forking and dispersal are not what I'd consider signs of unity.)
That said, this has been proposed before, but I think it's worth
considering switching to a model that lets consumers decide, a la
Reddit, what they want to subscribe to from Planet. People would vote
with their feet, and we'd gain a much better insight into what the
consumers of Planet want to see, rather than the current all or nothing
options. Those who want the whole enchilada would continue to get that,
those who want to pick and choose the projects/people they want to
follow could do so, without having to manually keep track of individual
feeds. I've yet to hear a concrete argument for why planet shouldn't
support this choice directly.
