Hi all,
First off, thanks all for being curious and digging into these
financials! I'm excited to discuss such questions as we lead the way in
a Mozilla Open Book way (we'll figure that out together)
Great job digging into the financial footnotes. This question
referenced the $814K of Software on our CY 2012 balance sheet. This is
the "balance" of our software purchased over the last 3 years. $814K as
of Dec 31, 2012 was an increase from $800K as of Dec 31, 2011. The only
software we purchased in CY 2012 was for our Mozilla Online (China)
operation ($14K). In addition, this balance is projected to go down
significantly in CY 2013 since a significant amount of this software on
the balance sheet was purchased in 2010 as we were still in "build mode"
to support our employee growth during that period.
Examples that make up the $800K historical purchases that haven't been
depreciated since 2010?
All were for "perpetual s/w licenses" (negotiated 1 time fees; I'd
rather pay cash 1 time for s/w at a discount than being dinged every
year at a higher rate) for critical IT infrastructure to support our
internal network and security.
* Arcsight - Security Scanning Software
* Netvault Enterprise Linux
* Zeus Load Balancing Software and Traffic Management Software
* Cisco Firewall Management Software
* Then dozens of little stuff (under $100K total) for 1-off's like
Microsoft V Studio Pro and other non-open source software required
by various engineers/product mgt/staff.
Things like Basecamp and ServiceNow we haven't purchased 1-time licenses
for. Rather, these are the classic annual SAAS licenses and we expense
them on our income statement as "Dues and Subscriptions")
Best
Jim

I'm sure Mozilla pays for some software. Basecamp and ServiceNow,
would be two examples that I think are safe to suggest.

In the context of that page, that's highly unlikely. While my guess is
as good as yours, on page 14, where computers and such are listed,
it's
likely this is software that our IT department purchased licenses for
and that are inventorized.
