I don't think Mozilla should "fight fire with fire". Rewriting users' bookmarks to inject our own affiliate ID is clearly not "self defense" because that "feature" provides zero protection against malware from rewriting our rewritten URLs.

Instead Mozilla should shine light on these companies' unscrupulous behavior and win users with respectful privacy solutions. For example, Firefox could include features like encrypted profiles (unlocked into memory by "logging into Firefox") or cloud-based bookmarks (as part of Firefox Accounts) to prevent tampering.
