My understanding is that the board was taken entirely by surprise by Brendan's decision to step down, and that they pleaded with him -- to the point of making him angry -- to stay on, if not as CEO, then in some other role. With hindsight, they may now wish they had acted differently while he was CEO. I don't know. I believe Mitchell Baker is working on a follow-up statement that will hopefully clarify things, but I don't know when it will be published.
