Mozilla Open Source Support (MOSS) was announced last week. It is a grant program specifically focused on supporting the Open Source and Free Software movement, with an initial allocation of USD $1 million. As a part of that project, I would like to propose to identify and eliminate usage of proprietary software by Mozilla.
https://wiki.mozilla.org/MOSS - Mozilla Open Source Support (MOSS) homepage https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html - the free software definition https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/proprietary.html - why eliminating proprietary software is important My original message to the moss mailing list was not met with enthusiasm. One thing I understood is that the project does not want to raise awareness of the importance of the users' freedom to redistribute software. My proposal to catalog software in use by Mozilla at the Free Software Directory, and to highlight software which includes proprietary components, does not have support. The reasons provided are "it's duplicate effort" and "we are aiming for open-source software, not for free software". However, I could not see an effort proposed to eliminate usage of closed-source software by Mozilla, either. I invite you to discuss these issues at the moss list. -- Svetlana A.
