Comment (by tshireman):

Email to Rick & Jon Katz today:
Let me throw in my 2 cents, but you are correct, we will have to cover
these topics during the call on Friday (ALS cohort characterization).

At the last GPC methods core meeting, we were discussing what needs to be
done for the ALS cohort characterization. Russ' group was bringing me up
to speed, as I have not been involved to date. Early on, someone had
listed PHYSICAL EXAM as a "variable" to be included in the cohort
characterization (noted in ticket #31: see bottom of email). We
acknowledged, in that meeting, that physical exam would likely entail
different patient measures, and we expressed the need to further identify
what the creator of the list really wanted. This was the original impetus
 for this line of discussion.

The cohort characterization group is supposed to come up with measures
that already exist in our EHR and figure out how widely those measures
occur in the selected cohort, e.g., ALS in this case. These measures will
be explored by groups at the other GPC sites as well.

This exercise is not about saying what will be added to the record or
collected in the future, as I understand it. It's a baseline exercise
about what we have and how well can we characterize a cohort ACROSS sites.
At this time, there are not any items related to medication exposures, so
I do not think we have to worry about those as of yet.

The following elements (see after my sign off) were identified in section
6 of the GPC proposal; how many of them can you find in HERON without too
much trouble? Many of these have been identified already by Wendy He &
John Chen and Russ' team, and they are able to characterize the ALS cohort
 pretty well already.

If there are specific variables you would like for us to check in the
domain of PHYSICAL EXAM, that are not otherwise on the list, please let us
 know.

 Best regards,

 Theresa
