The SEER Site Summary is a combination of Primary Site and histology. For example, breast cancer is not just "cancer with primary site breast"; it excludes some histologies; in the recode definition<http://seer.cancer.gov/siterecode/icdo3_d01272003/>, we see:
Site Group ICD-O-3 Site ICD-O-3 Histology (Type) Recode Breast C500-C509 excluding 9590-9989, and sometimes 9050-9055, 9140+<http://seer.cancer.gov/siterecode/icdo3_d01272003/#_+> 26000 In seer_recode.sql<https://informatics.kumc.edu/work/browser/heron_load/seer_recode.sql> this becomes: /* Breast */ when (site between 'C500' and 'C509') and not (histology between '9050' and '9055' or histology = '9140' or histology between '9590' and '9992') then '26000' A blog item tells the whole story: * Adding SEER Site Recode to HERON Tumor Registry integration<https://informatics.kumc.edu/work/blog/2012/01/seer-recode-sql> -- Posted on 2012-01-24 -- Dan ________________________________ From: [email protected] [[email protected]] on behalf of Justin Dale [[email protected]] Sent: Friday, August 22, 2014 4:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Cancer Identification\Primary Site VS SEER Site Summary Can someone provide insight on the differences between the Primary Site under Cancer Identification vs SEER Site Summary? For example, the breast has nine corresponding ICD-0-3 sites (C500-C509), all of which are listed under Cancer Identification > Primary Site > Breast in KUMC's babel hierarchy. I can select the individual sites or the entire folder to include all sites. Under the SEER Site Summary in KUMC's babel hierarchy, Breast is listed with a recode of 26000, which I assume rolls up the nine site codes based on info from the SEER website (http://seer.cancer.gov/siterecode/icdo3_d01272003/). I'm having difficulty understanding the differences between the two and is it really necessary to implement the SEER Site Summary in our i2b2. Does it have to do with a point in time in which ICD-0 was implemented and the SEER site summary was how it used to be done? Your insights are much appreciated. Thanks. Justin
