Cat6 cable costs little more from my wholesaler than Cat5e, as I said.
Throughput on 32Bit bus PCI boards usually saturate at 300 Mbs throughput, so 
on average the best you can achieve is triplicating your throughput with GB 
NICs as compared to 100 Mbs ones, but newer mainboards with integrates GB  
NICs seem to do a lot better than that - at least the socket 939 boards I 
recently bought all came close to the theoretical maximum throughput.

To test real life performance, I recommend "iperf" in "dual" mode
