Hi Greg
Thanks for the advice - few questions:
1. How would MD3/Pracsoft cope with what sounds like essentially an XP
peer to peer connection via a switch? Is the risks of data cirruption
any higher if one does not set up the system with a dedicated server?
The UPS is definitely needed.
Only Microsoft define client/server as requiring their server OS. If all
your data, etc. is being served by one or more computers, its the
server/s for that function. Hence file servers, mail servers, print
servers, DHCP servers, etc. This was all thought up for enterprise scale
systems not small GP practices. There is no requirement for a server OS
for MD3/Pracsoft, except for MS artificial ceiling of ten PCs accessing
an XP pro server. After that, it's 2003 server and all the extra costs.
Unless you want these other 'services' you don't need 2003 server, and
there are many other ways of getting most of them.
The only difference will be in your wallet. Make sure your server has
RAID1 and quality RAM[Kingston], mainboard, case/PSU - I recommend the
Antec SOHO server cases - and Western Digital now make more robust
'RAID' model SATA drives - they have the 'RE' name extension, and are
designed to run continuously with a higher MTBF.
2. I have a D-link 604T at home that is a modem, LAN and wireless
router. Using Ozemail and will try and stay with them as both the home
and work access areas should be close enough to the exchange where a
DSLAM is due to be installed in the near future - this will give me
access to ADSL 2+2 with 24 000/512 speed.
If you want a VPN install the 504T and the DI-804HV, and try hanging the
604T off the LAN side of the 804 in bridge mode for the wireless
functionality.
3. I thought the Broadband for health was a once off - I can still apply??
Yes, for round 2, but you also must do the Security and Conformance
Report. Bear in mind that no-one knows what round 3 will bring. each
round has provided 12 months connectivity thus far.
