Yes there are pros and cons with this but it does work rather well in a multi-site setup or with roaming profiles.

because that will solve another issue for me, and that is my preferred

It can, the driver has been in there for years, but no-one does it, considering you have already paid for an SQLBase license and that's a far better platform. Some new hospital sites are keen to rollout on MSSQL and I'm doing my best to talk him (Nat) out of it.
