It's a long story and I'm tired but, basically, Journal is a feature in M$
Outlook that allows you to record and link just about everything you do:
emails, document production, contacts, tasks, meetings, blah, blah, blah. I
started using it in Division Land because:
1. OL was what I was given to use
2. I needed to record then report on activities and statistics that the
inhouse designed Divisional database did not cater for

I did NOT use the Journal feature where it automatically tracked every MS
file produced - OL is bloated enough - but I did find it very useful after
constructing one in a table format, to enter all my liaisons with all of the
stakeholders, many of the training sessions I delivered, meetings attended
and more, and to mark those against a host of criteria that would be met by
each activity. Then it was easily exportable to CSV format where I could
manipulate the data for reports.

I have also used it as a CRM application to keep track of independent
consultations (non-medical) I did because I was already used to it and it
was integrated into OL and I was too lazy to pursue better alternatives, try
them out, learn them, attempt to migrate data and see if they would work for
me.

One other reason I was sticking with OL at the time was the HeSA PKI issue -
an Area Health I liased with was trying to develop an emailable discharge
summary using PKI for the encryption and OL was what worked with it for the
receiving end (they were not interested in third party messaging system).

And, no, I don't see much application at all for Outlook Journal in a
medical setting (or Outlook, fullstop). In fact, I am probably the only
user of OL Journal in Oz.

Hope this satisfies your curiosity :-)
