As has already been suggested in the article quoted by Tom Bowden, the time may be approaching where doctors such as myself keep their own aide-memoire separated from any "practice" software which they may also be using.

The only data to "shared" will be that which I currently give to my patients in paper form, namely the medical summary.

My trusty 12 inch ibook will have its uses still.

About those centralised data stores.
I would be very reticent to allow *any* primary storage facility for any
of the patients data that I have responsibility for be kept/held by
anyone else on my behalf. I dont mean a subset or extract held by
another for some useful purposes that might benefit patient care, I mean
the principle clinical package app being hosted on an internet based
website/portal (eg asp or php app run over the net).

I presume I am not alone here? A number of reasons leap to mind: 1)
access without broadband connection (ie when to$$tra is down - and i
doubt that kind of app would run over dialup acceptably), and 2)
_security_ being the 2 biggest issues as well as "possession and
ownership of the records".

If the model of centralised "hosted" apps is proposed one might be
tempted to think data storage for say a whole GPs data is best managed
by someone else to get around the whole web services technological
inadequacy of small to medium sized gps/specialists business thingo.

How would everyone feel having their data "hosted" offsite over an
internet based application (even if security could be largely - it will
never be completely- satisfied)?

Would anyone do it...be vocal...
