A typical cycle for backups that is considered to over come most problems

That may be a bit expesinve for HDD so tape is often used instead and also
for the daily backups often only the changes are stored and not the whole
filetsystem.

John,
Having just done the sums on a 160GB DLT system, your routine above is
probably cheaper, except our backup software is designed for tapes.
160GB tapes [80GB native, 120 or so in reality, cost over $90 each].
This is not much less than 120GB HDDs now.
On top of this the drives cost $1900, and the SCSI card $500. If we go
to a new server we'll be up for an additional $1300 for the new version
of Backup Exec, as our old version won't work with anything after NT server.
We use a two-week rotation set and a monthly tape.
My other aversion to HDD backup systems is that dropping a HDD can be so
easily fatal. USB2 HDDs are fine for data retrieval or transport, but
not to be left connected to a server as a backup solution. Even rotated
as I've seen often.
But I love RAID 1, as it is so cheap to implement and improves security
from loss of a HDD so much. In practices it means the difference between
a serious outage and a routine replacement of a faulty drive.
