Many thanks to these respondents. I am encouraged to proceed with
further exploration of the use of Amazon S3 for off-site encrypted
back-up secondary storage - I'll report back to this list after the
forthcoming weekend.

I heard an interview with the principal of an Australian-based start-up
company which hopes to compete with or even undercut the Amazon S3
Internet storage offering - see http://www.omnidrive.com/

Between Amazon S3, the forthcoming Google Gdrive and Omnidrive (and
there are several other players about to enter the market), there will
be plenty of competition (=low prices) and the ability to store
encrypted back-ups with more than one storage provider for additional
redundancy.

Of course, all this is predicated on decent Internet connectivity - in
particular, on decent upload speed and on no or modest volume charges
for uploads through your ISP - and that is not available to everyone.
But for those who can get it...
