One of my inhibitions about terminal services is that you become
absolutely dependent on the terminal server. The major choices become a
high-end 'real' server with redundant everything, like a fully kitted HP
ML350-G4, or a second terminal server online with double the licensing,
hardware and other costs,
We use the "bunch of similar boxes" approach. 2 workstations are
identical to the server hardware-wise (although less RAM).
Two years ago I had to move the server's sata RAID array (2 drives) onto
one of these spares when the server's graphics card failed (I initially
thought it was the MB) - this process took about 15 minutes.
Tony,
A bit like the 'emergency server' or 'spares on hand' approaches.
I assume that the fan on the graphics card died and it eventually fried
the chip on the card? I spend a lot of time ensuring server don't end up
with little fans on graphics cards, chipsets, etc. as they always fail.
My only hesitancy about what you have described is that I wouldn't use a
workstation-grade set-up for a server, especially if its going to be
left running 24/7. For that I feel it is risky using common grade power
supplies, cases with limited space and cooling for 24/7 operation, and
quality of boards, etc. You obviously have been mainly interested in
speed not saving money on your workstations, if they run boards able to
support SATA RAID, and are just like your server.
The thin client crowd and 'any old box as a client' crowd would be out
of business.
