Don't get me wrong - I agree medical modelling is incredibly complex. Health informatics wouldn't have lurched from one disaster to the next if the problem was easy..
I don't think HL7 V3 gives you the choices you think you have, but learning about HL7V3 is not a weekend course.
I think CDA is an effort by the HL7v3 people who have realised that hl7v3 does give too many choices, and hence it tries to classify and pigeon hole bits of information - but it goes too far and degenerates to blobitis "stick this blob of text here, stick that blob there"..
If you really want to know about HL7, you have to go to an HL7 conference in the USA and talk to the people that know lots.
Well the guy who I share an office with is a co-chair of a HL7v3 committee and he can't tell me - so agreed, I think it's going to take a lot more than a weekend course..
