Colleagues,

I am becoming increasingly concerned about the use of the freeware version of VNC by some GP software vendors and support organisations to remotely access GP computer systems for support purposes.

I am now aware of two organisations doing this, typically using the 2002 vintage freeware version. My view is that this is not secure enough. Among other sources reflecting that view the RealVNC website itself is promoting both their current personal and enterprise editions, which they compare to the old freeware versions, as offering better security for use over the Internet.

I personally wouldn't use it 'bare' but would do so inside a VPN. I've also spoken to the support manger at one division that provides fee-for-service support, and they won't use it either.

Comments please ladies and gentlemen!
