what makes for document management system ?
e.g.  using word , and saving to a network visible directory on a server could be a document file system.
The operating system file find function, could be used as the search tool for the directory, provided people
stuck to an agreed protocol of filenaming e.g. AboutWho Surname, name , DOB , fromWho Surname, name
otherwise a document management system is about storing attributed metadata with a file object,
and using some slightly more sophisticated search system to work with the metadata
(but not too sophisticated, or else people would give up on using it).

Michael,

We have used DNN - www.dotnetnuke.com - it runs on MS server - and is
great for document management.

Our website is done using it www.specialistservices.com.au and our
intranet is similar. It has a great document managment system and we
find it great for all other intranet type things like announcements

I also know a good programmer who can set them up cheaply
