Horst,
We must charge in a sensible manner to our client base, this in turn
provides long term sustainability and quality. Otherwise how do you
expect us to maintain the quality of a service/application over time?.
I know this is not new to you.
I think that most software providers here do a reasonable good job at
that. The proof is that all minus possibly 15~20 practices in australia
use mainstream commercial products and services.
Now, if it's so easy to implement and support, and you can give it away,
how come you have not come up with one yet?.
Something that doctors and practice staff like so much that they are
prepared to pay for it?
I understand your need to proselite about open sourcing, in fact we do
share some if not all of these views, however, patience and gentle
proding might work better than the pushing and wingeing that sometimes
goes on in this email. Just look at Argus, gently gently, there you
have it, who knows, maybe MD or BP is next.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just come to your practice and pay a
single amount (say 50 bucks, preferably 0 bucks) and have your medical
services delivered to us every time we want at perpetuity?.
Your example is unfit.
If you come with a factured ankle to me, I will X-Ray it, set it, put a
plaster onto it. Each action has a set fee which you get told beforehand, and
an expected outcome whcih you get told too.
I will not keep chargng you the rest of your life for "preventing the sequelae
of an untreated ankle fracture". If the plaster is not sitting well, I will
redo it at no charge. If the outcome is not as expected, you will sue me and
I will loose and have to pay - several orders of magnitude more than you paid
me.
That is, I solve your problem at a pre-determined one-off fee, and I am liable
for the outcome.
I want the same for software.
Don't tell me it can't be done - I have been in software development PRIOR to
getting into medicine for about as long as I have been in medicine.
