Well an update is due...
IBA Support dialling in last week after hours and suddenly the remote site
is more usable.
Not sure what they did but it is definitley quicker and the main server is
doing considerably less work.
We were thinking after running some performance monitoring that the main
server would need its 2nd xeon cpu and another 2 gig of ram as it was
sitting on 20-35% cpu and the disk queue length was getting up there at 2-3.

But after IBA has tweaked things it is back to an acceptable 2-5% cpu.

Love to know what they did.

So maybe Dr John Van Dyck has nothing to worry about next year after all :)
