They are indeed, which is why, in my 'retirement', I would like to try to
learn about them!

To convert a laptop into a more secure router for my internet connection.
Currently having to use Windows XP.

I guess I don't have to have a multi-session distro, just a decent but easy
to use Live CD would suit. Mepis does seem to be getting good reviews.

Funny you should point that out, David, I know this particular model doesn't
officially have Linux drivers but did speak to a techie for the company who
retails the U132 USB adaptors (which don't work with the cards when using
the Telstra connection) and he reported knowing it's been done but couldn't
elaborate. Therefore I thought some of the techies on this list might have
run across this out in a rural setting somewhere and had a go at it.

Guess I should have been asking for a link that would describe in good,
step-by-step, easy to undertand for absolute newbie, how to install various
pcmcia drivers in linux (or any hardware for that matter). So many of the
distros for so-called newbies still seem to assume heaps of prior knowledge.

>Get a new card? Get a new provider?

Believe me, I wouldn't be posting this question, if that were an option.
There are a few of us who live in absolute arm pits of Oz when it comes to
telecomms. Even tv reception sucks. I rent so not willing to spend heaps
for satellite and can't even get ISDN.

It took me 4 months to break my resolve and go with the Tel$tra wireless
mobile (I had to do all the research on my own to dispel all of the
misinformation I was given by their people) and because I wanted mobile and
a data plan rather than a time plan, I had exactly 2 choices of device and
because of exactly where I live, that became the one only, that accepted
external antenna.

The limited available plans suck, the pricing for same sucks, the fact you
can't use more than once device for the same plan sucks, the latency sucks
bigtime but it is still better than my pathetic dialup connection and frees
up the phone line. Although I still have to drive 20K to the local Online
Access Centre when I want to download really large files like Linux ISOs.

But, I do have to say, the one positive is, that the coverage for travelling
around Oz seemed good (short of carrying your own satellite dish around, I
suppose). I could rock up to many a camp spot in the evening in the camper,
backup photos, update my album and upload it to web and email everyone with
the latest 'postcards'.

Anyway, this exercise would hopefully, get me hugging my own penguins; I've
been back home for a couple of weeks now and looking for something useful to
do when in the house.

Cheers,

Jan
