Personally, I am not happy with Argus either. They procrastinate regarding
proper licensing and source code release,
Horst, I think you are re-writing history here a bit. You may not agree
with our licencing arrangements, but we have been quite up-front about
the arrangements
as those who attended the first 'Argus Forum' about two years ago will
attest to. We have been quite clear on the licencing regime acting on
advice given to us by a solicitor who works in open source licencing.
We only changed to allow GPL release of ALL code rather than the second
most-recent release in the latest release because it was becoming too
great a burden to manange the other way.
they have funny ideas regarding
compulsory registration of "free" software,
I recently provided the rationale to this and it had nothing to do with
trying to maintain commercial advantage. It had everything to do with
trying to maintain information about users so that we could provide an
accurate LDAP/Address Book and also provide better Help Desk service.
Those who have used our Help Desk will attest to how good they are.
and they don't cooperate well
with the community either (but at least they communicate).
We try, but just like doctors, we get incredibly busy and our bedside
manner sometimes suffers. We are pleased to cooperate and we will; we
just find it very hard to proactively work with patients in health
promotion when we are up to our armpits setting up the surgery.
BTW: I am more than happy to hand over governance of ArgusConnect to the
open source community if you had some rigorous means of managing the
organisation and its services; and find $500,000 per annum for upkeep of
these services. I have been trying for 4 years now to arrange just that
and have not found any means that doesnt also spell its demise through
loss of services and development resources to keep the product current.
And dont tell me Horst that the open source community can just have it
run itself; no need for managemenmt, managed development, dedicated Help
Desk staff and project management abilities. I am almost at the point
of just letting you try.
