There are millions of bright programmers out there: what we severely lack (perhaps worldwide) is IT managers who have hands-on coding experience.

Luckily we have at least a few GPs in Australia who have design and programming skills ranging from basic to very expert. The pity is that the bureaucrats and sometimes software vendors also don't recognise those skills and ask their advice or seek their involvement. (I would like to point out that I am not being critical here of ArgusConnect. I don't know enough about ArgusConnect's use of knowledgeable GPs.)

For example, I attended an information session a couple of weeks ago run by HealthConnect SA about specifications for discharge summaries and also about its imminent trial of an online care planning system (they have chosen to use the Ozdocsonline system for this trial). In a room of perhaps 60 people, I was the *only* GP present. The rest were assorted public servants and god knows else who probably found that attending a meeting at 10.30 a.m. got them away from the boss for a while and made a nice break from having to do anything else.
