I'd like to second the use of WordPress!! Easy to install, great community, can be hosted by yourself (Apache, MySql, PHP) and many a plugin. Too easy install. Although mac install was a bit fiddly if hosting locally; sing out if going this way. Another option is TextPattern which sounded intriguing but couldn't grasp the benefits of their structural schema. Blogger is one of the centrally hosted blogging sites; getting many a complaint these days under its new control.
