If x86 users are a little daunted by installing software but have a
spare box, I'd recommend Ubuntu server. The current version (6.10, viz.
October 2006) sets up a LAMP server on install. Create a directory
unpack WordPress, Mediawiki, OsCommerce or your favourite LAMP suite,
set your permissions (e.g. www-data user, with read write access),
configure through the web interface and you're away. I suspect there's
not a lot of difference between the Mac and Linux installs.
