I get a connection via SSH to the linux box, start up Remote Desktop

Any ideas what the problem would be?
This will only work if you are forwarding RDP to the local port
3390, as you would if you were on a Windows PC. Try connecting
simply to localhost.
As Pete says *will* work. I've been using it happily between home
Mac and work PCs for a year.
$ ssh <user>@<external ip> -L 3389:<internal ip - 192.168.n.nn>:3389
Remote Desktop Connection connects to localhost (by default on port 3389)
(To connect on port 3390, one would have to be redirecting the tunnel
over port 3390, since one could use any tunnel number for any thing.)
