A thought about the new system coming in : http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/providers/programs_services/medicare/electronic-claiming.shtml
- currently we use HIC -online for our Bbilling claims - as usual there are a few rejected items every week that needs to be fixed and resubmitted. How are they going to deal with this if the eftpos machine is used - will it be rejected outright? What about itemnumbers that needs descriptors such as with multiple procedures or more than one visit on same day? Typing in descriptors using an eftpos machine will take ages. If it is not rejected on the first swipe and the patient gets the rebate "almost instanteneously" what happens when Medicare then decides to reject it. Does the money then automatically get taken off the patient's account? Do we become liable for it? What about the banking costs associated with the refund, possible correction after resubmission etc. The money could move to the patients account and back several times if the query resolution is like it is at present with HIC online. The banks are going to make a killing if they charge $0.23 for every transaction and our staff will be tied up trying to sort out the mess. Once again - not interested - I can see the advantage of the system if the person is paying upfront (I could foresee my BB rate going down) but the potential hassles is simply not worth it.
