Test restores should only ever be done on a separate "test" system,
which is quite separate from the production system. Of course having a
test system starts to get expensive, license-wise, if you are using
MS-Windows servers and MS SQL Server etc. With Linux the cost of a test
system is just a few hundred dollars for a second low-end PC, or you can
even dual-boot workstation as a test server. With the arrival of
virtualisation, you don't even need a second physical machine.
