unfortunately, that's a big if. What's the rate of uptake for
computerized records nowadays : are almost all of the potential emr
converts already converted/locked-in with the current crop of cottage
industry applications ? Maybe someone should try to use some statistical
method (like monte-carlo or bayesian filters) to look at the data
contained generically ( just need to know how to access
4D databases, microsoft SQL, foxpro, and possibly firebird/interbase )
look for common patterns of data layout/ character/word sequences , and
attempt extractions into a common ehr schema format. Doable ? say for
a/some university researcher(s) ?

But as you say later an OSS platform that just started with the basics -
billing/front desk/basic records EHR would certainly get things going if
there was a reasonable number of users and data. You could build all
sorts of things on top of it.
Syan,
You outline the reason why this domain will have great difficulty
progressing under the current market structure very well. The current
model works, up to a point at th level of the individual customer, but
once you pull back to a wider perspective it strats to look like a shambles.
The prospect of a Division's members migrating to the three or four most
common packages would make any prospect of providing meaningful training
programs, Division-level IM&T projects, etc. very difficult indeed.
The de-facto standard that has been MD2 is inexorably fading away. With
its replacements also comes increased maintenance and training overheads.
