sounds not much different from a hibernate or s2disk, and a restore but
to a different machine. I suppose if the other machine had different hardware,
then it isn't as simple. Which I suppose, was the point of xen, to virtualize
all device drivers, so it is all the same on different machines.

Try Virtualbox. (http://www.virtualbox.org)
AFAIK it allows "hot snapshots" - at least the one I took of my system while i
use seems to be working fine on my son's computer
It installed painlessly in seconds via "Automatix" on a recent Ubuntu system
and worked without further configuration (just set up a virtual partition,
install guest system ...)
