Yes, after waiting eternities for Windows update to finish on a new install, it would be nice to capture the moment as an image, which could be reinstalled if the user does something nasty.

Ghost used to do this pretty well in the pre-NTFS days.
Any block copying program can take a snapshot. You can even do it with netcat over the LAN as I wrote about on this list earlier this year.

I still like Helix best for local disk to disk cloning. The GUI interface is less intimidating for new users.

Of course, the Zen of cloning is Xen.
