Also, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write_amplification which shows how blocks that are not needed but have not been trimmed can contribute to "write amplification" - SSD garbage collection may have to copy your stale data several times on average, which can slow overall performance and increase wear. Better to "TRIM", at least with some devices...
Also the authors' make the point that SSD is must be over provisioned, not thinly provisioned
