Hi Marcus,

I’m trying to understand when a camera is effectively ‘guaranteed' to work with
gPhoto as, at present, this isn’t clear to me at all.

For example, the Canon EOS M3.

If I look at the list of supported cameras
<http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php> the M3 is described as
having full control with 'Image Capture, Trigger Capture, Liveview,
Configuration’. This, to me, makes it look like I can use this camera to take
photos with gPhoto.

However if I look at the summary text here
<https://github.com/gphoto/libgphoto2/blob/master/camlibs/ptp2/cameras/canon-eos-m3.txt>
 I see 'File Download, File Deletion, File Upload, No Image Capture, No Open
Capture, Canon EOS Shutter Button’. This would seem to contradict the supported
cameras list.

The summary text matches what I see from the M3 I just bought and the feature
limitations are also as the summary describes. Basically I can view and
download images from the M3 but cannot take photos with it.

This email thread
<http://gphoto-software.10949.n7.nabble.com/Canon-EOS-M-users-td16515.html>
called 'Canon EOS M* users’ suggests that M3 capture is possible, which again,
is contradicted by the summary and my own experience.

I can return the M3, which is fine, I’m just curious how to work out if a
camera on the supported camera list is *definitely* controllable by gPhoto.
I’ve been using gPhoto for a few years now and it’s absolutely brilliant, this
particular part doesn’t quite make sense to me though :)

All the best,

Adam
